News for October 20-31

Hi!!!
The theme I decided to go with for the gift basket is "Mr Clean." Please send any new cleaning supplies you can think of. Hopefully we can make a fun basket that EVERYONE will want to buy!

Please plan on coming to the Halloween carnival. It really was a fun time last year, and I know they are doing even more fun things. I think the spook alley is the best in the valley! You can buy your tickets before that night, call the  school for more information.

Parent Teacher conferences are being held the first Wednesday and Thursday of November. Look for a note in your child's homework. It needs to come back ASAP so I can get you all scheduled. I love to have the students come with their parents, so please bring them.

I hope you are using the PLATO at home. You can find the link on the sidebar of this blog. Just click on the district link and the children know what to do from there. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to call.

Lunches for the last week of October are:
Oct 25: Canadian bacon pizza, peas and carrots, breadsticks, pears and milk.
Oct 26: Lasagna, tossed salad with crispy rice noodle, roll, pineapple and milk.
Oct 27: Hamburger gravy and mashed potatoes, corn, whole wheat roll, oranges wedges, and milk.
Oct 28: Chicken pattie, green beans, rice, whole wheat roll, frozen juice bar, and milk.
Oct 29: Wizard's brew, rabbit food, sticky bun, frog eyes, and ghostly beverage.

It has been really fun getting to know your children! Here are a few more kiddos on my 'favorites' list: (Actually, they all are!)

Hannah always tries to stay with whatever task she has to get it done first. She is a thoughtful friend who tries really hard to be nice to everyone--I really appreciate that!

Joe makes us all laugh when he reads with his monster voice. He is a great writer and gives me a lot of information when he is asked to journal.

Marcelina is quiet in class and always does her work neatly and well. I was proud of her this week when she sang the "Star Spangled Banner" to the whole school! She was GREAT!

Justin is very observant when we do the math board. He can figure out the pattern of the day really fast! He also has fun 'tells' for show and tell day.

Kylee is a really good reader. She always gets her work done, and done well. I know I can count on Kylee to help me when I need it.

Bridger makes us all laugh. In addition to his sense of humor, he is so good at the math board. He can come up with some really complex equations for the number of the day.

Thank you all for the support you give to your child's education! I couldn't do it without you!

Gift baskets

Each classroom teacher has been asked to make a gift basket for auction at the Halloween carnival. Each class can choose a theme for their basket. I wonder if any of my wonderful parents have ideas for a theme for this fun idea. I will also have to ask for donations for things to go into the basket. We have heard that other schools have done this and that it is a fun way to make extra money. Please comment here or contact me if you have any ideas for a basket. I will also be sending home a note in the Tuesday folder about this.

Thanks for all you do to help me!

October 11-October 22

Hi Parents!
It has been a while since I updated the blog. We have been very busy learning and working hard.
In math we have been learning place value, math vocabulary, problem solving, and different adding strategies. This week we begin a chapter on subtraction.
In reading we just finished the unit on kindness. We also learned about nouns, verbs, complete sentences, and we also practiced reading fluently.
We have worked on social skills like listening politely, waiting for our turns, and using good manners.
Our new reading unit is called "Let's Explore." Please help your child find something they would like to explore, or something in nature that interests them. You can also help them formulate questions about exploration. Anything you help your child with will be put on our question/concept board. Please help your child think about exploring things by helping him/her make a picture or a question about our unit theme. Our "Big Idea" concept is, "What did you discover outside today?" Autumn is a fun time to look under leaves, in bushes, and in the eaves of your house for insects. It is also interesting to watch animals to see what they do to get ready for winter.

The lunch menus for the next few weeks are:
Oct 12: Spaghetti and meat sauce, tossed salad, wheat roll, fruit cocktail, and milk
Oct 13: Turkey wrap, baked beans, banana, and milk.
Oct 14: Curly macaroni and cheese, green beans, roll, angel food cake with strawberries, and milk.
Oct 18: Chili, crackers, corn, applesauce, cinnamon roll, and milk
Oct 19: Corn dog, fries, carrot sticks, cake with cherries, and milk.
Oct 20: Beef tacos, cheese stick, salsa, spanish rice, pears, and milk.
Oct 21: Chicken nuggets, mashed potatoes with gravy, roll, fruit cocktail, milk.
Oct 22: Hamburger with bun, baked potato, strawberry jello, and milk.

Don't forget our school carnival. It was SO much fun last year, and I have heard through the grape vine that this year will be even better. Please plan on attending. Please volunteer if you can.

I love every single student in my class! For this blog I will not highlight any of them, though. Check back soon for reasons why I love them.

September 13-September 24

Hello Parents!
Just a reminder--today is the first day I will be sending home homework with your student. I need to have it turned in the next day, unless your child has an excused absence. There is a reading side and a math side everyday. Please have you child read for one minute, then circle how far they got, and write a number one by the circle. Do this two more times. If your child seems to be having problems with the passage, read it with him/her the second time and don't time that reading. The student should make good progress on the third reading and will feel FABULOUS about how fast they can read it. On the math side, please just check it for accuracy. If we wait until the next morning, a good teaching moment will be lost. Of course, if I see that there are many errors, I will address it during our teaching time. If you have questions about how we do something, please call me.

The lunch menus for the next few weeks are:
Sept 13: Pepperoni pizza, salad, pineapple tidbits, cherry cookie and milk.
Sept 14: Crispy chicken salad, breadstick, apple, and milk.
Sept 15: Corn dog, fries, green beans, cake with cherries, and milk.
Sept 16: Beef and bean burrito, corn, spanish rice, banana, and milk.
Sept 17: Turkey with mashed potatoes and gravy, California veggies, whole wheat roll, raspberry jello, and milk.
Sept 20: Chicken nuggets, mashed potatoes, whole wheat roll, peaches, and milk.
Sept 21: Spaghetti and meatballs, mixed veggies, hard roll, pineapple, and milk.
Sept 22: Beef taco, corn on the cob, apple crisp, and milk.
Sept 23: Hamburger, fries, carrot sticks, strawberry jello with fruit, and milk
Sept 24: Canadian bacon pizza, peas and carrots, breakstick, pineapple tidbits, and milk.

Now I will say why I LOVE a few more students:

Cordell is fun to teach! He listens so intently and pays such close attention. He does his best on all of his work. He is becoming a leader in our class.

I love having Mia in my class. She completes all of her work, and is helpful to other students. She is a friend to all the children and they all want to sit by her.

Leslie has the cutest smile! She gives great answers to all of my questions and is the first one to jump up when something needs to be done.

Katie is a helpful girl. She often stays after school for a minute and straightens the room for our custodian. She comes to school ready to learn. She also always knows where we are when we read together. She also knows how important it is to listen quietly for instructions.

Carson has been fun to work with in school too. I love to "watch the wheels turn" in his head. When he "gets it," his whole face lights up!

Mason wishes me a good day every single day! He tries his best to follow along, and uses his big voice when he reads so the other students can hear.

New School Year

We are off to a great start! The students and I are getting to know each other very well, and I have been pleased that they are trying really hard to do their best!

The school lunches for the upcoming weeks are:

Sept 1: Chicken pattie, green beans, couscous and rice, roll, strawberry jello with fruit and milk.
Sept 2: Hamburger gravy with mashed potatoes, wheat roll, peaches, and milk.
Sept 3: Ham and cheese sandwich, baby carrots, goldfish crackers, grapes alphabet cookies, and milk.
Sept 7: Beef taco, corn, applesauce, brownie and milk
Sept 8: hot dog on a bun, carrots, tostitos, peaches, and milk
Sept 9: chicken nuggets, baked potato, angel food cake with strawberries, and milk
Sept 10: hamburger with bun, natural cut potatoes, mixed veggies, fresh apple with carmel sauce, and milk.

Reminders:
There will not be school next Monday for the Labor Day holiday.
On Wednesday and Thursday there will be a two hour early release both days.

Each week I will highlight a few students.

I have enjoyed having Jake in my class this year. He always comes ready to learn, and I have noticed how kind he is to the other students.

Tabitha always remembers to raise her hand. She is a quiet helpful girl who I know I can count on.

Kennedy is excited to be in school. She has come to school every day with a smile on her face. I have noticed her watching out for her neighbors.

Stryker is a great example to the other students. Each day in math board, he gives us all math problems to think about.

Tylor tries so hard. He wants to do well, and I like to see him working hard. I love his eyes!

Joseph is so good at knowing and following the classroom rules. He is especially good at "Treating others the way he wants to be treated."

Kaycee has made me proud of her. Sometimes taking risks is tricky for second graders,  but every time we do introductions she stands up straight and tall and talks with a clear loud voice. She is also good at raising her hand if she has something to say.
